See this content in the original post

In this episode of the It’s Not What It seems podcast, you’re going to hear from the one and only, Seth Godin. Seth is an entrepreneur, best-selling author, and speaker, but most importantly, he’s a teacher. In addition to launching one of the most popular blogs in the world, which now has over 7,000 blog posts, he has written 18 best-selling books, including The Dip, Linchpin, Purple Cow, Tribes, What To Do When It's Your Turn (And It's Always Your Turn), and most recently This Is Marketing: You Can’t Be Seen Until You Learn to See. He’s also the founder of the altMBA, a completely digital and intensive 4-week learning process for up to 100 students at a time. In 2018 alone, there was students from over 45 countries!

Though renowned for his writing and speaking, Seth also founded two companies, Squidoo and Yoyodyne (acquired by Yahoo!). By focusing on everything from effective marketing and leadership, to the spread of ideas and changing everything, Seth has been able to motivate and inspire countless people around the world. In 2013, Seth was one of just three professionals inducted into the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame. In an astonishing turn of events, in May 2018, he was inducted into the Marketing Hall of Fame as well. He might be the only person in both.

Seth is one of the most generous people. He’s a tremendous role model and someone who has been very influential to my thinking over the years. It was quite the honor for me to get to chat with him on podcast and bring this conversation to everyone.

In our conversation, we’ll discuss:

  • The first time Seth realized it was his turn (7:04)

  • Some of Seth’s rules (8:35)

  • He teaches me a hard lesson in strategy vs tactics (10:33)

  • The key question education needs to continue asking (11:42)

  • Marketing in 5 steps (20:38)

  • The difference in pattern matching vs pattern interrupting (24:53)

  • Musical influences that have inspired Seth (28:28)

  • How the Grateful Dead is the epitome of Seth’s model of marketing (30:29)

  • The importance of embracing the concept of “status” (33:13)

  • When you should “quit” something (40:23)
