#25 - Chip Conley: The Case for Rewiring Not Retiring

See this content in the original post

In this episode of It’s Not What It Seems, I have a nice conversation with Chip Conley. Chip is the New York Times best selling author of five books, including Peak, Emotional Equations, and the one in discussion today, Wisdom At Work: The Making of a Modern Elder. He served as AirBnB’s head of global hospitality and strategy for four years, and today acts as the company’s strategic advisor for hospitality and leadership. Prior to that, he spent much of his time as a hospitality entrepreneur.

At 26 years old, he founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality, transforming an inner city hotel into the second largest boutique hotel brand in America. After running his company as CEO for 24 years, he sold it and was asked by the founders of AirBnB to help transform their promising startup into the world’s leading hospitality brand. He’s the founder of Fest300, part of Everfest, San Francisco’s annual celebrity pool toss that has raised millions for families in the neighborhood where he opened his first hotel. Chip is a recipient of hospitality’s highest honor, The Pioneer Award, and holds a BA and MBA from Stanford University, as well as an honorary doctorate in psychology from Saybrook University. He serves on the boards of Burning Man Project and the Assailant Institute where the Conley Library bears his name.

You’re going to hear about Chip’s journey and some of the wisdom he’s learned along the way. He’s a real genuine person, and I’m very thankful for the short time we had together. We had a good time during this chat and I think you’ll enjoy it.

In this conversation, we’ll discuss:

  • The key life lesson that surfing has taught Chip (4:17)

  • An important practice that Chip has done for 30 years (5:50)

  • Why becoming a “modern elder” is so important today (14:10)

  • What is a “mentern” (17:31)

  • The best question any boss, founder, or leader should be asking new hires (21:04)
