#28 - Bob Roth: The Power of Transcendental Meditation

See this content in the original post

In this episode of It’s Not What It Seems, I have a really important conversation with Bob Roth. Bob is the author of 2018 New York Times bestselling book, Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation. He is one of the most experienced and sought after meditation teachers in America. Over the past 45 years, Bob has taught Transcendental Meditation to thousands of people.

He’s personally taught the TM Technique to many names I’m sure you’ve heard of before, like Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen Degeneres, Katy Perry, Russell Brand, Hugh Jackman, and Michael J. Fox. He’s also the CEO of the David Lynch Foundation, so Bob has helped bring meditation to more than a million students in underserved schools in 35 countries, to military veterans and their families who suffer from post-traumatic stress, and to women and children who are survivors of domestic violence. Bob also directs the Center for Health and Wellness, which is bringing meditation to companies, government organizations, and nonprofits. Bob is the host of the Sirius XM radio show Success Without Stress, and has spoken about meditation to industry leaders at such gatherings as Google Zeitgeist, Aspen Ideas Festival, Aspen Brain Conference, and Wisdom 2.0 and Summit.

We talk all things meditation in this episode, and although I’m only at the early stages of my TM journey, I do believe it’s an incredibly useful tool for managing stress and living a more balanced life. I’m really happy to bring meditation further into the public conversation with this episode.

In our chat, we’ll discuss:

  • Why Bob started meditating and helped start the David Lynch Foundation? (6:10)

  • What is consciousness based education? (20:45)

  • What are the different types of meditation? (25:06)

  • Why is TM different? (27:16)

  • Why does someone doing TM for only a month have the same experience as someone doing it for over a year? (31:41)

  • Why TM is the preferred meditation choice for celebrities? (33:17)

  • What’s the difference between sleeping/napping and meditation? (44:52)
