#33 - don Jose Ruiz: On Living Better Through Storytelling

See this content in the original post

In this episode of the, It’s Not What It Seems podcast, I have an inspirational conversation with don Jose Ruiz. Maybe you remember my first conversation about Toltec philosophy with don Jose Ruiz’s brother, don Miguel Ruiz Jr. Like his brother, Jose lectures and gives workshops around the world. He dedicates his life to sharing the ancient Toltec wisdom by translating it into practical everyday life concepts that promote transformation through truth, love, and common sense. He is the author of The Wisdom of the Shamans: What the Ancient Masters Can Teach Us about Love and Life, and the co-author with his father don Miguel Ruiz of The Fifth Agreement.

The Ruiz family tradition has inspired and impacted millions of people around the world. Jose’s story is an inspirational one in and of itself as someone who’s battled through drug addiction and now spreads the Ruiz family tradition around the world. Sometimes I think it’s easy to lose sight of how much there is to learn from just simple stories. Storytelling can be really really powerful.

In our discussion, we’ll discuss:

  • Why Jose took the family tradition (5:17)

  • The first step in the road to recovery (8:54)

  • The biggest challenge to escape an old dream (10:01)

  • What is Shamanism? (13:51)

  • The difference between a personal dream vs the dream of the planet (17:16)

  • Why unlearning is probably more important than learning (21:13)

  • How to rid our addiction to suffering (26:51)

  • What we can learn from animals (30:52)

  • A problem with corrupt religions (36:43)
