Lyrics I Love #6: A Little Bit of Everything

About the Song

Track: A Little Bit of Everything

Length: 5:39

Album: Nothing Is Wrong (2011)

Artist: Dawes

Songwriter: Taylor Goldsmith

Favorite line:

“I think love is so much easier than you realize / If you can give yourself to someone, then you should”

Favorite verse:

“All these psychics and these doctors,

They’re all right and they’re all wrong,

It’s like trying to make out every word,

When they should simply hum along,

It’s not some message written in the dark,

Or some truth that no one’s seen,

It’s a little bit of everything.”

Here’s Why I Love It

What a beautiful song. My brother introduced me to it years ago, and it has been on my playlist ever since. Every time it comes through on rotation, I hit repeat at least once or twice. I can’t get enough of the unique structure. The song features three vignettes that show the versatility of the title itself, A Little Bit of Everything

First, you have a man about to end his life and having a conversation with the police officer on call. Second, you have a man in a buffet line and having a conversation with the server. Last, you have a couple about to get married and having a conversation about love. In every insistence, the conclusion is the same—it’s a little bit of everything. Of course, each situation possesses a slightly different meaning. The song ends with the verse you see above—a sweeping conclusion, and a perfect capstone to a really powerful song. I can’t imagine you not enjoying this one.

For those who might be unfamiliar, Dawes is a West Coast-rooted band that channels a modern version of that old California folk sound. They exemplify remnants of that classic Laurel Canyon sound from the 60s and 70s. Also, the lyric video linked below is super cool, maybe even the best I’ve found yet for any Lyrics I Love column.
