In this episode of It’s Not What It Seems—the first Book Club episode of 2019—my brother Darron and I discuss January 2019’s book of the month, 21 Lessons for the 21st Century, by Yuval Noah Harari.

Here’s a little more about Yuval Noah Harari:

Yuval Noah Harari has a PhD in history from the University of Oxford and now lectures at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His unique ability to make sense of where we have come from and where we are going has impacted millions around the world. He’s received critical acclaim for both his previous two books, Sapiens (2015) and Homo Deus (2017.) They’ve had massive global appeal selling over 12 million copies, which is pretty insane, for such a short period of time.

Here’s the a little more about 21 Lessons for the 21st Century:

Yuval Noah Harari’s 21 Lessons for the 21st Century is a probing and visionary investigation into today’s most urgent issues as we move into the uncharted territory of the future. As technology advances faster than our understanding of it, hacking becomes a tactic of war, and the world feels more polarized than ever, Harari addresses the challenge of navigating life in the face of constant and disorienting change and raises the important questions we need to ask ourselves in order to survive.

In twenty-one accessible chapters that are both provocative and profound, Harari builds on the ideas explored in his previous books, untangling political, technological, social, and existential issues and offering advice on how to prepare for a very different future from the world we now live in now.

As you can probably imagine this book unpacks a lot of big ideas and global challenges. In this conversation, Darron and I do our best to synthesize the overall message. Also, if you weren’t able to read this book for January, don’t worry, February is right around the corner, which means another chance to join the discussion. The next book club episode will air February 24th.
