#41 - Loretta Breuning: On Taming Your Anxiety
In this episode of the, It’s Not What It Seems podcast, I have a great conversation with Dr. Loretta Breuning. Loretta is the author of Tame Your Anxiety: Rewiring Your Brain for Happiness. You might remember my conversation with Loretta from way back in episode 3, we talked about the happy chemicals: dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins. I learned so much from that conversation, so when Loretta told me about her new book, I instantly wanted to get her back on the show to talk about it. It’s my belief that we all experience anxiety to a degree, so I thought this conversation would be incredibly pertinent for all.
Loretta is the founder of the Inner Mammal Institute, Professor of Management at Cal State University East Bay, and the host of the Happy Brain podcast. She’s authored several books, including The Science of Positivity, I, Mammal, and Habits of a Happy Brain, and most recently, the book in discussion today Tame your Anxiety. Her books have been translated into Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Arabic, French and Turkish. Her work has been featured on Forbes, NPR, Fox, the Wall Street Journal, NBC, Psychology Today, Cosmopolitan, Inc, Men’s Health, Fast Company, Dr. Oz, and Real Simple.
In this conversation, we’ll discuss:
How cortisol plays into anxiety (10:09)
The upside of cortisol (12:15)
What is anxiety? (13:55)
A few things that trigger cortisol spikes (15:40)
Loretta dissects a few important quotes from the book (21:59)
A 3-step technique that’ll help you tame your anxiety (32:07)
